On Sunday, June 9, 2002, a Spiritual Library for parishioners of SS. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Ambridge, PA. was officially opened. It is a project initiated and maintained by the Spiritual-Liturgical Committee of the Pastor's Advisory Council co-chaired by Fr. Michael Polosky and Dr. Vera Krokonko. Marie Perciavalle is the librarian, assisted by Christine Brunner and a volunteer staaff.
This project became a reality through the untiring efforts of Bill Waslo and Charles Babiak who set the foundation by transforming an empty storeroom into a library. Subsequently, through the dedicated effort of Marie Perciavalle, aided by her children, Cathy Concelman, Bob and Kenny Perciavalle, and with Christine Brunner and other members of the Spiritual-Liturgical Committee, organized and implemented the venture.
The spiritual library was instituted to enhance the spiritual growth of the parishioners and to provide a resource for inspiring the spiritual, religious and theological quests for information, as well as answering a need for providing a local source of material for furthering Ukrainian historical and cultural studies. The books in both English and Ukrainian, and other items, were donated by parishioners, various priests and organizations. There is also a collection of videos and audio tapes, a large portion of which comes from the estate of Joseph Rodio, a prominent Ukrainian-American parishioner, who had been quite active in the Ukrainian National Association and the League of Ukrainian Catholics. Comfortable seating id provided for the leisurely onsite reading of various newspapers and periodicals, such as The Way, The Beacon, The Ukrainian Weekly, The Pittsburgh Catholic, etc.
Children have their own corner for browsing through religious and spiritual storybooks, as well as a section of children's videos, a portion of which was donated by the Sobolosky Family. Associated activities are planned to include a Children's Hour and a family centered activity program utilizing the resources in the library.
Initially, the library will be open only on Sunday mornings and by appointment. Expanded hours will follow to allow parishioners and others to avail themselves of these resources.
